1. STAR AND STRIPE cross stitch filling pattern
This filling stitch is great for larger countries that have at least an area of 30 x 30 stitches to fill. In our example we used it for the USA
2. POLKA DOT cross stitch filling pattern
This filling stitch is great for large countries that have loads of territory. In our example we used it for Russia
3. SKIP ONE cross stitch filling pattern
This one is easy to remember. You just skip one cross stitch every time you go up or down. We used this for filling Brazil
4. OPEN MINI RECTANGLE cross stitch filling pattern
This one gives a beautiful twist to medium and large sized countries. We used this for filling South Africa
5. TURNED SQUARES cross stitch filling pattern
This pattern can be recognized from a far distance and is great for medium – to large countries. We used this for filling China
6. LONG cross stitch filling pattern
Double the height of your cross stitch with this pattern. It is great for small to medium sized countries. We used this for filling Australia
7. OPEN FLOWER cross stitch filling pattern
Fill your favourite country with this flower inspired filling . It is great for medium to extra large sized countries. We used this for filling Canada
8. HALF cross stitch filling pattern
This one saves half the work from regular stitches. You basically only make one leg of your cross stitch. It is great for small to medium sized countries. We used this for filling India, France, Japan and the UK
9. French knots cross stitch filling pattern
The best choice for tiny countries that you want to stand out on your world map. Fill them with as many French knots as possible. We used this for the Netherlands and Belgium
10. GALAXY cross stitch filling pattern
This filling pattern makes us think of falling stars. Use it for filling large to extra large countries.
Bonus tips
Add a sparkle effect to your cross stitch filling pattern
Do you like your cross stitch map to stand out even more? Fill them with sparkling embroidery floss! Choose from our DMC Etoile or DMC metallic floss and the map will start reflecting light. DMC Etoile gives a more subtle twinkle rather then the bling bling from a DMC metallic floss . For both floss types we recommend that use some bees wax to smoothen your floss.
You can also add sparkle by stitching the world map on a iridescent cross stitch fabric. This is fabric with a metallic thread woven into the fabric, which will reflect the light just like mettalic embroidery floss. Learn more about different cross stitch fabrics here in our blog.
