How easy is it to crochet this headband?

This pattern is at intemediate level. Basic crochet experience is expected. You need to know how to make a chain stitch and single crochet stitch. We included detailed step by step instructions and pictures for how to make the cable effect with the front post double crochet stitch. Making this a great pattern to learn a new crochet technique.

Included stitches:

  • chain stitch
  • single crochet stitch
  • front post double crochet stitch

In this pattern, cables are made with a front post double crochet. Using that method, a double crochet is made around a stitch a few rows back.

You make a front post double crochet by inserting the needle around the post of the stitch from the front to the back and on the other side back to the front.

When you make a stitch around this part of the previous stitch you pull the stitch to the front, creating a cable and relief effect.

The pattern uses these stitches straight down and diagonally to simulate a cable pattern.

Step by step instructions for making the adult crochet headband

As every person has a unique headshape, we advice to measure your head before you start. Simply wrap a measuring tape around your forehead, over your ears to your lowest hairpoint. The lenght that you measure should be the width of your headband. Wool has a bit of stretch, so for a good fit you rather make your piece a bit smaller than too large.

Good to know: The piece is turned at the end of each row. The odd rows are the right side, the even rows the back.

Start

Make a chain of 16 stitches.

Row 1.

Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, single crochet in each chain. (15)

Row 2.

Chain 1 and turn your work. 1 single crochet in every stitch until the end of the row. (15)

Row 3.

Quick description: Chain 1 and turn your work. 2 single crochets, 1 front post double crochet around the 3rd single crochet of row 1 (straight down), skip 1 stitch, 3 single crochets, 1 front post double crochet around the 9th single crochet of row 1 (diagonal), skip 1 stitch, 1 single crochet, 1 front post double crochet around the 7th single crochet of row 1 (diagonal), skip 1 stitch, 3 single crochets, 1 front post double crochet around the 13th single crochet of row 1 (straight down), skip 1 stitch, 2 single crochets. (15)

Row 3: part 1

how to crochet a headband row3 step 1

Start this row with 1 chain and turn your work. After that make 2 single crochets. After that comes the first front post double crochet. You make this around the 3rd single crochet of row 1, which is straight down. In the picture it is the stitch the needle has been hooked under.

Row 3: part 2

how to crochet a headband row3 step 2

You will make the front post double crochet by inserting the hook around the post of the stitch from the front to the back and on the other side back to the front. This is where you will pick up your yarn and then finish the stitch.

After the front post double crochet, you will skip the stitch behind it. You can see that clearly in the picture. You skip the stitch that has the needle in it, and instead carry on working in the stitch with the hook in it. Make 1 single crochet in this stitch.

Row 3: part 3

how to crochet a headband row3 step 3

Make a single crochet in the following 2 stitches as well.

After these 3 single crochet stitches you will make another front post double crochet. But this time we will make it diagonal.

Make a front post double crochet around the 9th single crochet of row 1. In the picture the needle is inserted in that one.

This might take a few tries and feels rather uncomfortable because it is quite a distance to go. Our tip: do not make your double crochets too tight.

Row 3: part 4

how to crochet a headband row3 step 4

After this front post double crochet, you will skip the stitch behind it, and make a single crochet in the stitch after. Like in the photo: skip the stitch with the needle in it and make a single crochet in the stitch with the hook in it.

Row 3: part 5

how to crochet a headband row3 step 5

The next stitch will be a diagonal front post double crochet around the 7th single crochet of row 1. This stitch will cross over the previous front post double crochet. In the picture I have lifted the 7th stitch.

The first time it may feel a little strange making stitches this way. And at this point your fabric is still very small so it pulls a little curled and weird.

Row 3: part 6

how to crochet a headband row3 step 6

After this second diagonal front post double crochet you skip the stitch behind it. Like shown in the following photo.

Single crochet in the next 3 stitches.

You should now have just 3 stitches remaining for this row.

Row 3: part 7

how to crochet a headband row3 step 7

Now it is time for the last front post double crochet for this row. This time we go straight down again.

Make a front post double crochet in the 13th single crochet of row 1. In the picture I have lifted this stitch up with the needle.

Skip the next stitch and make a single crochet in each of the last 2 stitches of this row.

When you are finished with this row it should have 15 stitches.

Row 4.

Chain 1 and turn your work. 1 single crochet in every stitch until the end of the row. (15)

Row 5: part 1

how to crochet a headband row3 step 1

Chain 1 and turn your work. 2 single crochets, 1 front post double crochet around the 1st front post double crochet of row 3 (straight down).

Row 5: part 2

how to crochet a headband row5 step 2

Skip 1 stitch, 3 single crochets, 1 front post double crochet around the 1st crisscrossed front post double crochet of row 3 (straight down).

Row 5: part 3

how to crochet a headband row5 step 3

Skip 1 stitch, 1 single crochet, 1 front post double crochet around the 2nd crisscrossed front post double crochet of row 3 (straight down).

Row 5: part 4

how to crochet a headband row5 step 3

Skip 1 stitch, 3 single crochets, 1 front post double crochet around the last front post double crochet of row 3 (straight down).

Row 5: part 5

how to crochet a headband row5

Skip 1 stitch, 2 single crochets. (15)

At the end of row 5 your work should look like above picture.

Row 6.

Chain 1 and turn your work. 1 single crochet in every stitch until the end of the row. (15)

Row 7.

how to crochet a headband row5

Chain 1 and turn your work. 2 single crochets, 1 front post double crochet around the 1st front post double crochet of row 5 (straight down), skip 1 stitch, 3 single crochets, 1 front post double crochet around the 2nd front post double crochet of the centre cable of row 5 (diagonal as pictured), skip 1 stitch, 1 single crochet, 1 front post double crochet around the 1st front post double crochet of the centre cable of row 5 (diagonal), skip 1 stitch, 3 single crochets, 1 front post double crochet around the last front post double crochet of row 5 (straight down), skip 1 stitch, 2 single crochets. (15).

how to crochet a headband row7

At the end of row 7 your work should look like above picture.

Row 8.

Chain 1 and turn your work. 1 single crochet in every stitch until the end of the row. (15)

Repeat row 5 until 8 until the headband is the desired length.

For me that were 23 repeats. The size of my headband is approximately 10 cm wide and 53 cm long.

Finalize

When the headband is long enough and fits your head well (it will be a stretchy fabric, so rather a bit too small than too large for a good fit) end the pattern repeats after an even row and cut the thread. Keep about 30 cm spare thread after cutting.

Put both short ends of your crochet work together with the right side inside and stitch them together with the left over thread. For extra strenght, go back over it a second time. Weave in all ends.

Your headband is ready!

Bonus: Mini-me headband pattern

I intended to make a headband with a single ball of Gordita wool. But being creative, it never goes the way you plan ;-). So, to make something fun of the remaining yarn she came up with a special children’s version of the headband: the mini-me headband!

I crochet rather tight. So if you crochet (very) loose, it is possible you run out of yarn before the smaller headband is done. I had about 35-40 grams of yarn left by the time I was done with the adult version.

As the mini-me version is an adaptation of the adult headband, I am only giving a concise description. Should you run into issues you can look at the above description and pictures of row 3. Just make sure to put your front post double crochets around the right stitches.
