In this masterclass, you’ll learn how to turn your own drawings into a textile art pieces. You’ll learn how to create your own punch needle design, how to pick your colours and how to turn your design into a wall hanging or cushion cover. We’ll work with premium ecological supplies from our collection.

Morning

We start the day at Studio Koekoek with an introduction of how to sketch for punch needle projects. Of course there’s coffee or thee to start the day. You’ll get familiar with the 3 size punch needle that we will use for this project, the fabric that we’ll work on and the thickness of the yarn we’ll use. We’ll share punch needle designs as inspiration and you develop the first concept of your project.

We’ll go outdoors for a “En Plein Air” sketching session in the canals and streets surrounding Studio Koekoek. You make sketches of plants, buildings or objects that you like to include in your punch needle projects. If it happens to be a gray and rainy day we’ll make a short trip to the Hortus Botanicus so we can sketch indoors. We go back to the studio to turn our sketches into punch needle transfer patterns.

Lunch

We’ll have a lunch break with tasty vegetarian sandwiches. Please let us know if you have any diets.

Afternoon

After lunch we transfer our patterns to the punch needle fabric. And then it’s time for the fun part. Punching! You’ll get step by step help to get started. During the session there will be plenty time for personalised tips to give your project extra depth. You’ll make a good start with your project and, depending on the level of detail of your work, you may even be able to finish.

Skill level and Preparation

The masterclass is suitable for beginners at punch needle.

We do recommend you to come prepared with a first concept idea of what you’d like to punch. Either bring samples of your own work or arrive with a theme you like to work on. Do you like to create a botanical themed work? Or would you like to make a study of Amsterdam buildings and structures?

You do not necessarily need to be an expert drawer, but you should not be afraid to draw in public. We happily help you to get started. Depending on your skills your design can be made with basic shapes or with more details.

If you are an experienced water colour, painting or pencil artist, you’re welcome to bring some of your work with you. It may be a great starting point for your punch needle design.

Language

We’ll host the session in both Dutch and English
